To speak, one is forced to use language, to rely on its system of signs and on its representational value. Our use of it is what perpetuates and empowers the code itself that allows to understand reality and to interact with it.
When approaching Alice Morey’s floor-installation, the viewer is induced into a violent act that addresses this association of an ordinary action with its destructive implications. It is as if our daily gaze on things that forces them into a significant system of knowledge is inevitably connected with a loss.
The gain of meaning operates only on the surface things. In the perilous transition from material to image, Morey’s artworks rather investigate ways of aggregation to make arise an image that means what it is.
